Trenchless methods
Sewer line replacement in Hartford
Some laterals are beyond rehabilitation. When the video shows pipe that has caved in, been crushed, or sagged into a trough that holds water, the line is replaced, and around Hartford that replacement rarely requires a trench anymore.
Rehabilitate or replace
Relining keeps the original pipe in service as a form for the new one. Replacement discards it. The camera determines which path a Hartford lateral takes. If the existing pipe is cracked, root-infested or corroded but still round and still sloping toward the main, it can be relined. If a section has caved in, been crushed under a footing or a root mass, gone flat the way old Orangeburg does, or settled into a trough deep enough to hold inches of water, there is no longer a usable form, and the pipe has to be replaced. The encouraging part is that replacement, too, is now mostly a trenchless operation.
Replacement by pipe bursting
In pipe bursting, a tapered steel head somewhat larger than the old pipe is winched through it from a pit by the main toward a pit at the building. The head breaks the old clay, iron or plastic outward into the soil, and a string of fused high-density polyethylene follows it in, occupying the same path. Nothing between the two pits is excavated: the lawn, the driveway, the floor slab, the sidewalk and the roadway are all left as found. HDPE has no joints for roots to exploit, does not rust, bends with ground movement rather than snapping, and is designed to serve for a hundred years. The head can be sized to pull in a larger pipe than the one it destroys, which solves the problem of a 3- or 4-inch lateral under a house that has grown into more bathrooms or more units. For a Connecticut lateral that cannot be relined, bursting is the default. The technique is laid out at the no-dig methods reference.
The short dig
Occasionally a few feet of pipe defeat the bursting head: pipe crushed flat right under a foundation wall, a tap at the main needing reconstruction, or a fitting too tight for the head. That stretch alone is dug: a hole a few feet long, new PVC coupled to the existing line, an inspection by the local authority, then backfill and compaction. The rest of the lateral is relined or burst. The old practice of trenching the full run has become the exception, reserved for pipe so shallow and so short that digging is honestly faster. Pipe under the house itself, whether the floor above it is a slab, a crawlspace or a basement, is nearly always better handled from inside than by cutting the floor.
Reading the proposal
A proposal for replacement ought to be anchored in the recording: the collapse at a stated footage, the trough between two stated footages, and a plain statement of why a liner cannot be used. It should identify the pipe material, the permit plan and the warranty. If someone recommends replacement with no camera inspection, or a full trench with no explanation of why bursting is impossible, a second opinion is warranted, and the contractors in the verified installer directory are a reasonable place to get one.
Permits and the public right-of-way
Replacing a lateral requires a plumbing permit. Work beneath the sidewalk or street adds a street or encroachment permit, often traffic control, and in many jurisdictions an inspection of the new connection by the sewer utility before the pit is closed. Responsibility for the lateral usually runs to the main; the contractor confirms the rule in force in Hartford, pulls the permits and schedules the inspections. A utility locate goes in ahead of any digging or pulling, since the head displaces soil near gas, water, electric and communications lines. Every one of those tasks belongs to the contractor, and the proposal should say so.
Records for the new pipe
At the end you should hold a video of the finished line along its full length, the permit sign-offs, the pipe material documentation and a written warranty. HDPE installed by bursting carries a long warranty term, and these records are what a future buyer, lender or insurer will want to see. What the listed contractors had to demonstrate before being included is explained at how installers are checked.

Questions we hear about sewer line repair & replacement
What tells me my pipe needs replacing rather than relining?+
The inspection video. If the pipe still holds its shape it can be relined; if it has caved in, been flattened or settled into a trough, it is replaced. The report should state which applies and reference the footage that shows it.
Will replacement tear up my yard?+
Not usually. Pipe bursting swaps the entire lateral through two small pits, one at each end. Open excavation is kept for a short stretch that a bursting head cannot get through, such as pipe crushed directly beneath a footing, and even then the hole is a few feet long, not the length of the yard.
What pipe will be installed?+
For bursting, high-density polyethylene fused into a single jointless length. For a short dug section, SDR-35 PVC tied into the existing line with approved transition couplings, inspected by the local authority before it is covered.
Am I responsible for the pipe out in the street?+
Most local codes make the owner responsible all the way to the main, sidewalk and roadway included. Working there requires a street or encroachment permit plus an inspection; the contractor confirms the local rule and takes care of both.
How do I get a price?+
Call or use the form. An inspection is done before anything is priced, and the proposal identifies the method along with the footage behind it. Estimates are free; call now.
